Such was the success of Django Reinhardt, a giant of French jazz, that in 1943 even the occupying Nazis wanted him for a series of concerts in Germany. But, sensing danger, he preferred to flee from Paris with mother and pregnant wife to Thonan-les-Bains, from where he hoped to reach Switzerland with the help of a lady admirer. But his escape was more complicated than expected.
